I was planning to take this week off from the blog as I am headed out on Tuesday to California for vacation. Then Monday rolled around, and I changed my mind. I decided to write a quick blog post about something that has been on my mind for a while now.
As a financial planner, so much of my job is focused on helping people make sure they have the future they want. Most advisors preach budgeting, cutting costs where you can, investing every extra dollar, etc. However, I don’t subscribe to all of these principles. I have seen too many people neglect the present to save every dollar for the future, but never get to enjoy the things in life they were waiting on. They gave up vacations, eating out with friends, new clothes, etc. in hopes of one day getting to enjoy this money they saved up. But what if this day never comes?
Let me tell you this.. Saving every penny today is not worth it. You do not need to give up everything to achieve the future you want, you just need to find a balance.
We all need to realize that life is meant to be lived to the fullest. The reason we work so hard is so we can enjoy our life right now, not so we can save every penny in hopes that when we are 65 we can finally have some fun.
So… I wanted to write this and give you permission to take that vacation with your family. Or to go out to eat with your friends. Or to go to a concert with your significant other. Do something you genuinely enjoy, and don’t worry about your savings balance, just for one day. Have some fun, you deserve it!
